Frequently Asked Questions

Find the answers to common questions about custom ABA therapy. We guide you in your journey to better understand your next steps.

What is ABA Therapy?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the leading approach to improving the developmental deficiencies associated with autism. ABA therapy is likely able to improve the quality of life of your child and help them reach their full potential. Endorsed by the U.S. Surgeon General, ABA therapy focuses on human behavior and is able to increase desirable behavior and minimize unwanted behaviors.

How will ABA Therapy help my child?

ABA therapy will address the developmental needs identified during an initial assessment of your child’s abilities across language, social and behavioral domains. An individualized teaching plan will be created to target any area of need, but common goals include learning to ask for help, learning to follow classroom instructions, and how to use language across a variety of settings.

Other important target areas of ABA include social skills, play skills, potty training, self-care skills (brushing teeth, washing hands, etc.), and day-to-day living skills (independently getting dressed, following safety instructions, etc.).

When is the best time to start ABA Therapy?

Simply stated: the earlier, the better.

Plenty of clinical research has demonstrated that children who start ABA therapy as early as possible (~2 years old) make the most significant improvements. We serve children on the autism spectrum from 18 months to 14 years and offer personalized programming for their unique needs. Therapy program options may differ based on clinic. Does Arlo provide guidance for parents?

Yes. Parental involvement in treatment is crucial for any child who is enrolled at Arlo. All caregivers or parents with children in our program will participate in recurring Family Guidance sessions to ensure you are receiving the necessary support to help your child progress.

Will my insurance cover ABA therapy?

Each insurance plan is different and must be thoroughly evaluated to determine whether or not coverage for ABA is provided. Our staff is happy to help you navigate the insurance process.

What is an ABA assessment?

An ABA assessment is not a diagnostic assessment, rather it is a time utilized to observe and work with a child to determine what their unique needs are. There is also a detailed parent interview included in the assessment to learn about your child’s behaviors at home, in school, and any other environment in which your child spends time.

The assessment is scheduled once a family completes the registration process and is informed that there is availability to start therapy. Once the assessment is completed, Arlo creates a treatment plan and therapy program which is reviewed and approved by the family.

ABA assessments are conducted regularly (typically every six months or so) to make program adjustments as your child continues to make progress and meet his or her therapy goals.
